Many of my clients often ask me how it is I always seem so calm...so peaceful. They are often surprised to learn that I have to work just as hard at developing a peaceful state of mind as anyone else. There was a time when I was ridden with anxiety and thought it would be a miracle for myself to ever be free of it. I spent many mornings committed to an hour of daily reading, devotions, and meditation while all the while, "breathing through the anxiety of it." I too had to fight the urge to get on to my daily to-do list....get going with the work stuff that my ego would have me believe was the essence of my worth. To this day, I must return again and again to the lessons I learn in my morning devotions. The core messages of our ego are strong. As Eckhart Tolle (one of my favorite authors) puts it, "they will take you on a wild river ride." There was a time when my mind seemed to like that wild river ride. My soul....not so much.
I've chosen to carve out at least an hour every morning to read, meditate, walk in nature, and write. It hasn't been easy to push past the anxiety caused by my ego's core messages. But it has changed my life. It has changed my way of Being in the world. It helps me break free from "the vain illusions" of the world. Claiming an hour for my own healing helps me Remember Who I Am.
The toxic core messages of the ego are strong. We have brain washed ourselves to believe that our worth comes from some external accomplishment. These messages perpetuate depression, anxiety, addictions of all sorts, and endless relationship problems. We spend almost every waking hour reinforcing these messages that then perpetuate more unhappiness...more dis-ease. If you think of it, an hour every morning to begin undoing these messages is small in comparison to the time we spend reinforcing these toxic messages.
You are worthy of this time. You are worthy of happiness.
You are worthy of the joy of remembering who you are!
Perhaps it's time to consider committing to your own morning time to remember who you are. Starting with even 20 minutes is better than none! Consider a guided journal or daily devotional book to help you get started. Finding peace and calm in this crazy world is a choice worth committing to!
